Agriculture and Architecture

Agriculture

As mentioned in my previous post, farming and agriculture is one of the main industries in Huron County. Living here, I think I sometimes take for granted how important the fields of soy beans, wheat and corn are to the economy of the area and the health and sustainability of the country. My next set of photographs were taken just outside of the village of Benmiller on Hills Road. I wanted to capture the beauty of this time of year in a little-travelled part of the county.

Architecture - Balls Bridge

 THE BRIDGE THAT LOVE BUILT
Ball’s Bridge was built in 1885 when a smitten engineer, working on the bridge at the mouth of the Maitland in Goderich, fell in love with one of the Ball daughters. He built Ball’s Bridge so that she would no longer have to get her feet wet when crossing the Maitland River near her home. Ball's Bridge has been a part of the Maitland River landscape for over 125 years! Ball's Bridge appears to retain an excellent degree of historic integrity. Ball's Bridge, as a two span structure, is exceptionally rare, and stands out as a significant example among Ontario’s remaining pin connected truss bridges. Even the construction of the bridge back in 1885 resulted in
a marriage between the bridge engineer and a member of the Ball family. Take a drive over this bridge and witness its tranquillity.

Located 4.5 km south of Auburn on Little Lakes Rd. Just west of Baseline Road (County Rd. #8). Follow the signs.

This picturesque bridge in the middle of rural Huron County is ideal for gorgeous photographs. This particular day, the sun was just starting to set and the water was so clear, the reflections were spectacular. There had been a heavy rain the day before, and it was one of the few opportunities canoers and kayakers have in late spring to go down the Maitland. Normally, water levels are too low for this to happen except right after the spring runoff or after a heavy rainfall, but Ball's Bridge is a popular starting point when water levels are right.

Welcome to Beautiful Huron County

My very first blog post ever... this will be an interesting experience!

The premiss for this blog is to document how gorgeous Huron County is and how full of beautiful photographs it can be. I got the idea while out on a photo drive with my dad - I thought, "Wouldn't it be great if I could put my lifelong love of Huron County and my newfound love of photography together?" I decided a blog would be best so that I could share these beautiful places with people who already know how great this area is and with people who have yet to discover it. Hope you enjoy!

For those of you who don't know, Huron County is a small, rural area of Southwestern Ontario, located along Lake Huron. The largest town is Goderich (Canada's Prettiest Town). The HC is widely known for its agriculture as well as it's beautiful beaches, of which the latter will be focused on today.

Goderich Main Beach

Sunsets, walks along the boardwalk, jumping off the pier.... all of these scream summer in Huron County. Although these photos were taken in May and it was ridiculously cold and windy, I think they still capture the beauty of Lake Huron.

The boardwalk is one of the shining features of the Goderich beaches and spans 1.5 km, joining all three beaches (Main, St. Christopher's and Rotary Cove).

There are also playground areas, washrooms and food stand areas at all three beaches, making an ideal location for visitors and locals to come and relax.

More pictures of this beach and others in the area will be featured as the summer. For more info about them, visit the town of Goderich website www.goderich.ca or www.ontarioswestcoast.ca
